BANGALORE: The Rotary Club of Indiranagar will organise an orientation programme on September 6, for more than 1,200 girls of Government High School and Junior College at Sonnahallipura village in Hosakote taluk, Dr Krishnan Menon, President, Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar Club told reporters here. The programme will train adolescent rural girls on the proper use and disposal of sanitary napkins.“Most times, cost is a factor that deters rural girls from buying sanitary pads.In a year, girls lose up to 55 working school days during their menstrual cycle,” Menon said. The idea first came, when the club undertook training of 4 rural women of a self-help group from the village, in the manufacture of cost-effective sanitary pads and napkins. These women were sent to Manipal and Udupi for training.“With the help o f these women, we could train 87 teaching personnel last August. They will in turn train their students,” said Menon.T h e f o u r t r a i n e d women have setup a manufacturing unit in Sonnahallipura village.Considering financial constraints of rural girls, these cost-effective pads are priced at `5 for a packet of 8 pieces, against a market cost of `20.The balance cost of the manufacture is paid by the club.“The programme will address 2 issues — the health aspect of these rural girls, and also the financial side by providing quality sanitary pads,” said Menon.
