New Delhi: ITBP DG Ranjit Sinha on Monday said that rescue operation were on in Sikkim even though there were difficulties due to incessant rains and landslides.
"More than 400 villagers were rescued and brought to battalion headquarters. They were given shelter, food and warm clothes," Sinha said.
"Whatever facilities are available with us, we have put it up for the disposal of carrying our relief and rescue operations," he said, adding that Pegong in north Sikkim was the worst affected area.
He also said that 30 tourists both local and foreign have been brought to district headquarters. "We have been able to maintain communication through wireless sets and other means. Once the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) team reaches, it will further facilitate rescue and relief operations, he said.
While adding that there were no reports of any casualties during rescue operations, he said, "We have 2 battalions present in the area. We don't have any information of any casualty in the rescue operations."
ITBP was the first responder as no other paramilitary police was present in the area.
"Between 6.30 pm- 7.15 pm there were 3 earthquakes that rocked the north eastern part of the country. Power supply also got disconnected. Rescue operations were severely hampered because of incessant rains and landslides," Sinha said.
There are reports that people working at Teesta Power project were also stranded.
It was also reported that the weather has now cleared up.
