The K C S Paniker Gallery on the Museum premises in the city has been remaining closed for renovation work for nearly a year now. The gallery, which was officially closed on September 9 last year, was to be reopened to the public in May this year on the sidelines of the birth centenary fete of K C S Paniker.
When contacted, the officials concerned said that the delay occurred owing to the step-by-step renovation process that has been going on. “The facelift process comprises a series of steps on flooring, ceiling, walls, electrical works etc. The area of the gallery too was expanded. Now, work on the display background is going on. If things go as planned, the gallery can be reopened by October,” said Manjula Devi P S, superintendent of the art museum.
The gallery established in 1979 used to exhibit 62 paintings and four sculptures by K C S Paniker. The paintings included his early works in water colour to the last, ‘Words and symbols.’ According to the official, the works that were put on display are kept inside the Conservation Lab at the Museum now.
However, the restoration of paintings cannot be expected to happen before the proposed reopening in October. “Restoration of the paintings may take time depending on the nature of each of them,” said Director of Museums and Zoos K Udayavarman.
“The National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property (NRLC) in Lucknow will do the restoration work of the paintings. They have given an estimate to us. Though the process is time-consuming, the paintings would be displayed when the gallery is reopened,” added Manjula Devi.
