New Delhi: Director Rupesh Paul's 'Kamasutra 3D' is among the 300 odd films vying for an Oscars nomination. It is among the 289 'Feature Films In Contention For 2013 Best Picture Oscar', according to an official release on the Oscars website.
As per the Academy rules, in order to be eligible for 86th Academy Awards consideration, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, December 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days.
Under Academy rules, a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.
Feature films that receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release are not eligible for Academy Awards in any category.
The 86th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on January 16, 2014 at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
'Kamasutra 3D' makes an entry in the contention list of the 86th Academy Awards in three categories - Best Motion Picture, Original Score and Original Song with 5 songs. It is the only movie from India contending in the music category. The results were announced on December 16, 2013 by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on its official website.
'Kamasutra 3D' features Sherlyn Chopra in an important role.
'Kamasutra 3D' is the only movie with 5 songs after 'The Great Gatsby' to be in the list of contention for the Original Song category. The songs include - Aygiri Nandini, Saawariya, I Felt, Of Soil and Har Har Mahadeva - composed by Chennai based music directors, Sachin and Sreejith while its lyrics are penned by Rupesh Paul and Pratyush Prakash.
Speaking on the Oscar entry, Paul stated, "Probably now we have an answer for all of them who claimed the movie to be a soft porn. Hopefully, they know that soft porns are not eligible for the Academy Award nominations". He also claimed that he would like to genre his movie as musical than epic or erotica as he assures that 'Kamasutra 3D' is influenced with its melody over the drama.
The film is based on Vatsyayana's 'Kamasutra', which is a study of human sexual behaviour. The original book is in Sanskrit and gives glimpses of ancient Indian culture.
'Kamasutra 3D' portrays the changes in the body and thought process of a person due to love and sensuality. It's a period film which showcases the world of ancient kings whose lives were embodied with betrayal and war.
Milind Gunaji, who is playing a pivotal character in the film, said, "When Rupesh Paul gave me the news for nomination I was very very happy. From the beginning I knew that this film will be big, so I was not highly surprised. It's an honor for me to be part of such a prestigious project. When I was narrated the story, I had immediately said yes, so beautiful and powerful was the character. Although the name suggests erotica but its subject is way beyond that. My character of 'Raja' is very powerful and well learned man. He is envied and feared by other smaller kings. Now hoping and waiting for winning the laurels."
But, this doesn't mean the film is nominated in any category, but it has been found eligible to fight for the nominations.
The film's best chance to get a nomination is in the original song category where five of its songs are among the selected 75 songs.
