BALASORE: The low pressure induced rains for the last three days have brought cheer to the farming community in the northern region of the State. The farmers have resumed agriculture activities and workers could be seen removing weeds and preparing the land for transplantation of paddy saplings. Only 40 per cent sowing could be completed by the first week of August.Although the region received rain in June, it was not the case in July considered as peak time for farming activities which had upset the farmers. The rain triggered by a low pressure has now raised hopes of the farmers. The region received a total rainfall of around 27 cm in past three days. Official sources said while Balasore received 70 mm rainfall, Mayurbhanj the highest 140 mm and Bhadrak 60 mm.According to the Agriculture officials, the district has registered just an average rainfall, which was not sufficient to filling up the water bodies. The sowing of kharif crops was also delayed owing to lack of adequate rainfall till the second week of July.A farmer Rabindra Tarai said last year, they had finished transplantation by this time. “Despite the delay, we can still expect a good yield,” he said.
