Literacy in India has been improving as more people gain access to better education, yet it is still lagging behind. In 2022, the literacy rate in India was approximately 76.32 percent, with men constituting the majority of literate individuals. But even then, there are interior regions in rural India where the literacy rate is alarmingly low. One of them is a village named Konda Chola Nallur on the outskirts of Tamil Nadu’s Puducherry. With the majority of the village residents being illiterate, even the pass percentage of Class 10 and Class 12 students have been very poor over the years. Back in 1998, Assistant Inspector Ilango had passed out from a school in this village. It was a rare achievement, as only 8 students had passed the Class 12 exams that year. Assistant Inspector Ilango happened to be one of them. Now, 26 years later, Ilango is overwhelmed with emotions as he witnesses the rising rate of literacy in his village.

Ilango urged the students to make use of these opportunities. As a gesture of celebration, he served biryani to the successful students, presented on traditional thaliana leaves. Ilango’s efforts to motivate rural students have garnered praise from all quarters, highlighting the impact of his work as an Assistant Inspector.

This year, more than 50 students have passed the Class 10 and Class 12 examinations and it is a great achievement for the townsfolk. There is an ambience of celebrations and joy in the village because of this.

To encourage academic achievement, Ilango, who is an Assistant Inspector at Thirubuvanai Police Station, personally funded incentive prizes for students who scored high marks and passed their 10th and 12th class exams in his native village of Banda Cholanallur. Speaking on the occasion, Ilango expressed his joy, saying, “It gives me great happiness to see so many students in my town studying and passing their exams. Your future will be bright if you continue to pursue your education. Skill development education programs have been launched for our students, and we are dedicated to enhancing their critical thinking and practical skills.”
