THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘Delight’ e-toilets, developed by Eram scientific solutions based in the city, has been honoured with the e-world Public Choice Award instituted by the Centre for Science, Development and Media Studies in association with Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and Union Department of Science and Technology for innovations in the health sector.‘Delight’ surpassed  five other competing nominations comprising of solutions from leading corporates in the health sector. The nominated projects were screened and put online for the public to vote. The projects which received the maximum number of votes under each category received the e-world Public Choice Award and ‘Delight’ came out first in e-health sector.The Award Night was held along with the e-World Forum at The Ashok, New Delhi, the other day.The Chairman and Managing Director of Eram Group Siddeek Ahmed received the award from  Union IT and Telecom Secretary Chandrasekhar. The e-World Forum was inaugurated by Union Minister for Human Resources and Communication and IT Kapil Sibal.The keynote address was delivered by  Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and  Innovations.The e-World Forum is a Global Thought Leadership Conference on Governance and Health. The e-World Award and the Forum have been constituted to encourage institutions and leaders to use and apply ICT tools in various developmental and sector-specific projects in governance and health and to identify and popularise emerging leaders and innovative projects from the different sectors, including grassroot-level organisations.The idea behind ‘Delight’ was to develop an eco-friendly public sanitation system based on a novel convergence of electronic, mobile, web and bio technologies, to serve as an affordable, sustainable and effective public toilet service.The e-toilet works on total auto mode system. The insertion of a coin opens the door for the user, switches on the light - thus saving energy - and even directs the user with audio commands.The toilets are programmed to flush 1.5 litres of water if the user takes up to three  minutes, and 4.5 litres of water if the usage is longer.They can also be programmed to clean the platform after every five to 10 persons use the toilet. It features automated door opening, power flushing, automatic closet washing, sterilisation and automatic platform cleaning mechanism, all backed by SMS alerts to inform the control room about the status of the water tank and biogas plant in the event of any errors or failures.‘Delight’ was the recipient of the Annual CSR Award 2011 instituted by the Kerala Chapter of Project Management Institute.
