New Delhi: A bomb went off in a crowded South Delhi market at 1415 hrs IST on Saturday afternoon. The blast took place almost a fortnight after the serial blasts rocked the national capital. Eyewitnesses say that the explosion took place after two persons dropped a packet from their motorcycle.
CNN-IBN spoke to Joint Commissioner of Police Southern Range Ajay Kashyap to get the details about the blast. Here is the gist:
CNN-IBN: What is the situation on the ground and with respect to preliminary investigations?
Kashyap: There has been a low intensity blast at 1405(sic) at Mehrauli and after the blast a number of people were injured. Unfortunately, we lost one child in this incident. We are investigating the case and the entire Delhi Police machinery is there to find out who are behind this and trying to work it out as soon as possible.
CNN-IBN: Is Delhi Police approaching these investigations with a fresh mind given that today’s (Saturday) blast both in nature and modus operandi are different from that of the serial blasts.
Kashyap: Let me tell you about the incident there was a motorcycle with Delhi number plate on which two people were riding and the pillion rider has reportedly left a small object wrapped in a newspaper on the road and this device exploded causing the injury and subsequent death. The spot has been visited by out experts and in due course they will give us the feedback on what is the type of device, what is the chemical used.
CNN-IBN: Small insignificant explosions have been reported from across South Delhi over the last many months, was a comprehensive investigation launched into it?
Kashyap: There were two explosions reported in January - one was on 16 and other was on 31. The third earlier to that was in December sometime. These three were reported and all three were low intensity blasts and we are looking into the continuity factor as well.
CNN-IBN: There is understandably a sense of fear among the citizens of Delhi as there has been a blast within 14 days of the serial blasts that rocked many crowded areas of the capital. What is that you want to tell them?
Kashyap: I would request the public to be vigilant and help us in the eyes and ears scheme where they become our force multiplier and keep a strict vigil in public places where the footfall is high and we are stressed under normal circumstances. In these cases if the public is a bit more aware and more sensitive they can act as the eyes and ears of the Delhi Police. Let me assure you there is no cause for any panic and these cases are going to be worked out.
