Power crisis to be solved by 2014

Union Power Minister M Veerappa Moily on Saturday said that the continuous power crisis faced by the Southern states would reduce considerably by 2014 by connecting the Southern Grid to the rest of the country.

Speaking at the launch of a Solar PV installation at the offices of Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA), Moily stated that India was ahead of other countries in the adoption of Solar Energy generation technologies. “Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, we plan on adding 20,000 MW of Solar generation by the year 2022. Karnataka today is third in the country in terms of solar power generation and must aim to achieve first place,” he added.

Moily also said that the use of fossil fuels like coal for power generation was an outdated method and would be phased within the next generation.

State Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje said that the state had adopted the Energy Conservation Building Code in government buildings and would also look at introducing them in houses and other non- government owned buildings soon.  “We are also planning a 5,000 acre Solar Park in Bijapur. The power generation company KPCL is also setting up various 3-5 MW solar projects in the state,” she said.

The current installation in the BMRDA has a capacity of generating 7.6 KW out of which Shobha said that 4.6 KW could be supplied to the grid and 3.3 KW could be stored as backup. The BMRDA solar project was funded from Member of Parliament Local Area Development funds of B Jayashree, MP Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.
