With deadline day slowly approaching, franchises are under pressure to make the right call regarding the players to retain or let go for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) mega-auction.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) one of the most popular franchises in the league, will once again look to make changes to their side in hopes of winning their maiden title. But RCB’s approach could be dictated with a more local approach as the franchise is reportedly under pressure to hunt for more local talents, something RCB is not exactly known for.
According to a report by the Times of India (TOI), “It is understood that there is considerable government pressure on the franchise to go local for this cycle and it will not be a surprise if they look at Karnataka players during the mega auction”.
While Virat Kohli is pretty much a sure shot to be RCB’s 1st pick as their retention. However, questions arise regarding who the side would be willing to keep when it comes to the rest of the squad. Glenn Maxwell has been firing with the bat, and Mohammed Siraj has been fairly expensive with the ball for the past two seasons.
With regards to local talent, from the likes of Rahul Dravid, to KL Rahul several Karnataka-based players have represented the franchise but none of them have been given a long rope to firmly establish themselves.
Among the current group, Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Prasidh Krishna, Manish Pandey and Vijaykumar Vyshak are some of the top talents or senior players from the state.
There are many more players from the state that are not on the domestic side and RCB could look at some of the finer talents that took part in the Karnataka Premier League to bolster their squad once again.
With a rebuild on the cards, a few local additions to the squad could be the spice that the side needs to possibly go all the way to claim their first IPL title. One thing is for certain RCB does need a rebuild to bring balance to their squad.
