BANGALORE: The pourakarmikas who are in contract with the city corporation held a protest march here on Wednesday to draw attention to their plight.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Contract Pourakarmikas Union carried out the march from Mysore Bank Circle to the BBMP head office. They demanded that the contract be cancelled and they services be made permanent. They alleged that according to the contract, they were entitled to get Rs 207 a day but in reality they were getting only around Rs 67. They further demanded gloves and other protective gear for working. They are aggrieved about poor healthcare facilities, such as no sanitation or even a soap to wash their hands.

The pourakarmikas have threatened to go on a strike and not take a month's wages if their demands are not met. They blamed the state government for not monitoring the contractors who were denying the pourakarmikas their rights.
