Ports requested not to move granites of accused firms: SP

The Chairpersons of Chennai and Thoothukudi ports have been requested to withhold the transport of granites from 10 companies accused in illegal quarrying activities in Madurai district.

This was conveyed in a status report filed by V Balakrishnan, SP, Madurai district, in the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday.

The report was filed in the division bench comprising Justices PPS Janarthana Raja and M Vijayaraghavan, which is hearing a batch of petitions filed by V Anbalagan and others for transfer of the investigation of illegal quarrying to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The SP, in his petition, said the port trusts have been requested to withhold the transport of the cargo from the PRP Granites, Madura Granites, Olympus Granites, Sri Om Sri Granites, Deepa Impex, P S Granites, Sindhu Granites, Kumar Granites, Sait Granites and PRP Exports, till the process of investigation was over.

He further added that to prevent the accused from escaping to foreign countries, a requisition has been given to the Bureau of Immigration, Chennai, to issue lookout circulars to the accused.

Steps have been taken to impound the passports of the accused as well, the SP said.

Anshul Mishra, Madurai Collector, in a separate status report filed in the court, said out of 175 quarries in the district, 167 quarries have been inspected till August 21. Out of which, 89 quarries have been found to have violated the rules. Almost all the quarries among the 89 have been found violating the minimum safety distances prescribed.
