CHENNAI: The Madras Port and Dock Employees Union organised a massive demonstration at Chennai Port Trust on Wednesday demanding regularisation of junior engineer’s who have put in 15 years of service in the port without job confirmation, and asked for promotion of junior assistants (JA).Demonstrators said normally, employees of the Madras Port are promoted after two or three years. However, about 65 engineers working in the port since 1997, have not yet been promoted. They also said nearly 175 JAs had not been promoted as senior assistants although colleagues appointed at the same time had been promoted.Narendran, general secretary, Water Transport Worker’s Federation of India, said, “An employee’s normal working period is 30 years. But, for the past 15 years the JAs are working without any job security.” K Govindharajan, vice-president, CITU, A Krishnamoorthy, treasurer, Water Transport Worker’s Federation of India and the affected employees took part in the demonstration.
