Zamboanga,(Philippines): An unidentified suspect killed Southern Philippines Mayor Don Caluang in a feud, the local police said on Monday.
Witnessess say the man shot Don Caluang in the face at close range after a heated argument between them on Sunday, outside Caluang's family home in the southern port city.
Two of the mayor's private security escorts were also shot and wounded, while a police officer standing nearby was hit by a stray bullet, police said.
Caluang is mayor of a small town in nearby Jolo, an island in the Philippines' southern tip where blood feuds among prominent Muslim clans are common. Don Caluang, belonged to one of the most an influential Muslim clans in the area.
Zaldy Ampatuan, Governor of Jolo, said he had ordered a manhunt for the suspect. Police said the killing could be politically motivated or related to a family feud.
"We will investigate the killings thouroughly, leaving no stone unturned. I have ordered the police to find those who are responsible," Ampatuan said.
