KOCHI: The price rise of petrol by Rs 3.32 a litre has evoked a strong sense of disapproval in regions in and around the city. “The decision to hike the petrol price is shocking. At a time when the market is in bad shape and the petrol availability is not so low, such a decision is unacceptable,” Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Deepak Ashwani said. Also, with the increase in the value of the dollar, such a price rise is surprising, said Shantu Joseph at the Sea Food Exports Association of India. The price rise which comes into effect on Friday, has mostly affected the common man.Vengadesh K, an autorickshaw driver, who has two kids and an ailing wife to look after, said: “The government’s decision is inhuman. Such a decision has been taken to please the bigwigs of the country. They don’t care about the common folks who struggle, day in and out to make a living. In a city like this, with the heavy traffic rush, the price rise is unfeasible.”Also, it seems that many of the vehicle users will have to switch over to gas instead of petrol.“Petrol vehicles have less mileage and using gas is the only feasible way to run our vehicles on the street, though it is dangerous,” another autorickshaw driver said. However, advocate Diaus S feels that since people are helpless about the price hike, they will be conscious initially but will gradually accept it as a reality.Meanwhile, the DYFI and the Youth Congress members staged a march to a petrol pump at Palarivattom, against the price hike in Petrol.
