CHENNAI: Amid growing concern over the rise in fatalities caused by tipper lorries, a 36-year-old teacher and her nine-year-old daughter were killed when the two-wheeler in which they were proceeding to school was knocked down by a truck in Pattabiram on Wednesday.The victims were identified as R Soumya and her daughter Madhumita, from J P Estate in Avadi.An investigating officer of the Poonamalle Traffic wing told Express that the two were travelling on a Scooty to Angel Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Thirunindravur, where Soumya worked as a teacher and Madhumita studied in class four.As the two-wheeler was negotiating a curve near a bridge at Pattabiram, a stone’s throw away from the local police station, a tipper truck carrying cement hit the vehicle from behind, the officer said.In the impact, the duo was thrown off the vehicle and crushed under the wheels of the lorry. They died en route to a private hospital in Porur.The lorry driver, Krishnamurthy, who was proceeding from Ennore to Pattabiram with the cement load, was driving rashly and arrested, a police official said.
