Pakistan claims Lower Dir freed of Taliban hold
Lower Dir is also hometown of radical cleric Sufi Mohammad.

Islamabad: Spokesperson for the Pakistani army Attar Abbas held a press conference to tell that Lower Dir had been cleared of militants.

"The Frontier Corps' action in Dir has achieved its aim. Lower Dir has been freed of the nefarious elements and almost 70 to 75 of their men (Taliban) have been killed. We have also lost 10 soldiers in the operation," Attar Abbas said.

Saying it had run out of options, Pakistan had on Tuesday sent its ground forces into action against the Taliban in Buner district in the country's restive northwest.

Buner is just 100 km from Pakistani national capital.

On Sunday, Pakistani security forces moved into Lower Dir to the south of Swat to flush out the Taliban that had taken control of the area.

Swat, Buner and Lower Dir are part of what is termed the Malakand division of the NWFP.
