Painting contest held on moving train

A unique painting competition for school children was held on a moving train here on Sunday. Nearly 700 students from various government and private schools took part in the 13th edition of the annual competition organised by the Pondicherry State Artists’ Society.

The competition, a brainchild of the society’s president Kalaimamani A B Ibert Delaperle, began at 4 pm on Sunday onboard a special train to Villupuram. The students had to present their creations within the 40 minute journey. The theme of the competition was ‘Environmental Protection’. They were allowed to use crayons, colour pencils and sketch pens but no water colours.

Emile, one of the organisers, said seven coaches of the special train were reserved for the competitors. A total of 50 winners would be announced in the first week of November. Ministers P Rajavelu and Panneerselvam jointly inaugurated the competition.
