THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  A review meeting of the Onam pageantry which will mark the end of Onam week celebrations in the capital city on September 13 was held on Saturday. The cultural procession would have over 100 floats. The meeting held at Guest House, Thycaud, was presided over by Tourism Minister A P Anilkumar. Varkala Kahar MLA, the chairman of the procession committee; K R Jyothilal, the committee convener; Rani George, Tourism Director; Mohanan, joint director and various government officials attended the meeting.As in previous years, art and dance forms of different states and districts and floats of various government, public sector institutions, cooperative and local self-government institutions will be part of the cultural procession. Unlike other years, this year, prizes will be given for the best presentation in each category, ie Central, State Government, public sector, cooperative sector, local self-government, private sector and individual. Janashree and Kudumbashree units too can be part of the procession.In order to increase public participation, sports and arts clubs and various groups have been allowed to participate. Those who would like to participate with floats and other individual items should register their names with the festival office at Tourism Directorate before August 27.Sports MeetA sports meet will be held in connection with the Onam week celebrations under the auspices of the District Sports Council. Competitions will be held in football, kabaddi, tug-of-war, wrestling, gymnastics, fencing, boxing and karate. The first round football matches will be held at Pozhiyoor, Vizhinjam, Peroorkada and Valiyathura on September 2 and 3.The top two teams can take part in the final rounds which will be held at Valiyathura ground from September 5 to 8.The kabaddi matches will be held at Kanyakulangara on September 4 and 5. The tug-of-war contests will be held at Shangumugham beach on September 4. A ‘vilambarayatra’ will be taken out from Sports Council to Kanakakkunnu on September 6 and it will have the participation of sports personalities. It will be followed by various sports and entertainment programmes.Interested teams should register with D Mohanan, convener, Onam Sports Meet, District Sports Council, before August 27.
