New Delhi: The Congress president and United Progressive Alliance's Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday congratulated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the completion of two years of his government and showered praise on him for leading the government with ‘vision and wisdom’.

“Manmohan Singh has led the Government with vision and wisdom,” she said, adding that “a far-reaching legislation has been passed and put into place for weaker sections of the society” during his regime.

Highlighting the achievements of the UPA Government, she said many of the commitments made in the Common Minimum Programme have been implemented and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act has been passed. She highlighted the NREGA as the most ambitious programme of the government to have been implemented successfully.

“The legislative record has been impressive,” she said, adding: “We hope to fulfill the rights of tribal community in the days ahead.”

“The UPA may have different perspectives, but understanding and sensitivity to each other will serve the purpose,” she said. “We may have difference of opinion with the Left, but deep down, their steadfast commitment is with the UPA. UPA is not just a collection of political parties, it reflects the very nature of our polity,” she underlined. “UPA serves as the perimeter and reflects the colours of society.”

“We have faced many challenges in agriculture,” the UPA chief said, adding that “it is our collective responsibility to see to it that the CMP is working.”

She said in the months ahead, “we seek to bring reforms for the tribal community and in the agricultural sector, especially the handloom weavers who have faced several challenges.”

“We also look ahead to Bharat Nirman and the promises we made under the National Rural Health Mission about providing midday meals and various other schemes. We seek to implement these schemes in the days to come,” she pledged.

“The Right to Information Act is essential for greater accountability in the government. We wish to build upon the nation’s economic prosperity at par with social justice,” she said.
