BANGALORE: After taking big strides in the software sector, the state is now aiming to make a mark in hardware.Releasing the ‘Electronic Hardware Policy 2011 and the Information and Communications Technology Policy (ICT: 2.0 ) 2011’ at the IT Biz curtain raiser on Monday in Bangalore, Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries, Murugesh Nirani said four new corridors operating on the lines of the Special Economic Zones had been identified.The four new corridors were Bangalore-Tumkur, Shimoga-Hassan, Hubli- Dharwad and Mysore-Nanjangud.“There would be a mobile manufacturing and assembling region over 100 acres near Bangalore International Airport,’’ Nirani said and added that preliminary notification in this regard had been given. “A Destination Karnataka Team would be set up,’’ he said, adding that the state electronics innovation fund, with an initial funding of `25 crore, aims to help entrepreneurs for developing vendor resources with a focus on indigenisation of quality pooling for electronic products. “All this will take effect within two months,” he added.Highlighting the areas of concern, in terms of growth, Sharad Sharma, who chairs the Nasscom Product Forum, said, “Bangalore is not punching at its weight class.” He said their forum had predicted the IT business to grow to $225 billion by 2020 and that much of the growth would come from areas that the city was not involved in.He said the city and industry needed to explore options “which demonstrate meaningful growth”.He said many of the major mobile and Internet companies were based in Delhi.CEO and co-chairman designate of Infosys, Kris Gopalakrishnan, said the state contributed 30 per cent of the country’s IT exports.
