THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The UDF high power meeting on Monday decided not to hike the minimum fare stage of students in private buses. UDF convener P P Thankachan told mediapersons here that as 25 paise was withdrawn it would be rounded off to 50 paise.
The recommendation of Justice Ramachandran Committee report to hike the minimum fare to Rs 5 will be considered. Practically, there will not be any hike in charges as the fare stage for minimum fare will be increased from Rs 2.50 km to Rs 5 km. Transport Minister V S Sivakumar will hold discussions with the private bus operators in this regard, Thankachan said.

Liquor Policy

The UDF also decided to debate the liquor policy further at the next UDF meeting scheduled to be held on August 16. There are some shortcomings in the policy as it was framed in a short span of time after the UDF Government came to power. The policy of the government is to reduce the consumption of liquor in the state. Liquor ban will be imposed in a phased manner and awareness campaigns will be conducted in this regard.

Thankachan also said that discussions would be held with Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission on the decision to impose thermal surcharge of 25 paise per unit from September 1. Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed will discuss this issue with SERC to effect this hike from October 1 onwards. However weaker sections, who consume less power, will be exempted from the hike.

Thankachan also pointed out that the surcharge is inevitable as there was no power hike after 2003.
