No headway on B'lore township project
No headway on B'lore township project
With traffic moving at a snail's pace in Bangalore, new projects seem to have come to a standstill too.

Bangalore: Heavy traffic, clogged, narrow roads, poor water and power supply — This is 21st century Bangalore for most residents of the city, not the oasis of calm that are the Information Technology (IT) campuses.

Yet, it could all be different. There's plenty of space around the IT city and the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) did announce five integrated townships.

But that was three months ago and the public-private initiative hasn't taken off since.

"We're not clear about it because the government has not actually told us what areas exactly they are looking at, if these have been acquired and how long they're going to take to acquire these properties," says regional director of Trammell Crow Meghraj, Mahesh Laxman.

So no one seems to be taking responsibility in the corridors of Vidhana Soudha even though Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy is said to be keen on the project.

As for the BMRDA, it is awaiting the approval of the state cabinet.

The townships were to come up at Sathnur, Ramanagaram, Bidadi, Solur and Nandagudi at a total cost of Rs 22,300 crore.

Of particular interest, however, was the Nandagudi township around 30 kilometre from the new International airport at Devanahalli.

To be built on 18,000 acre of land, the 6,600-crore rupee township would have provided the much-needed infrastructure around the airport area.

With land readily available on the periphery of Bangalore, integrated townships seem to be the best way to decongest the city.

But with no clarity on the mode of execution or a time frame for completion, these projects remain a distant dream for Bangaloreans.

What's your reaction?
