Chennai woke up surprised to a pleasant day in the middle of peak summer on Tuesday. Little did people know that the pleasant day would be followed heavy rainfall lashing the city and neighbouring districts.
Cyclone Laila had brought the rainfall, and she was heading towards Andhra Pradesh in all her fury. As the sea turned rough and the winds blew at a high speed uprooting trees, the fishermen were asked to stay away from the sea and people were advised to stay indoors. The next 24 hours saw very heavy rainfall in Chennai and places like Cuddalore, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram.
By Wednesday night, Laila had claimed two lives in Tamil Nadu and it was heading towards the Andhra Pradesh coast in all her fury. The region has already started rescue and relief operations by evacuating thousands of people from the low lying areas that are expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone’s wrath.
The good news though is that Cyclone Laila is finally showing signs of weakening and by the time it hits the coast in Andhra Pradesh, it could weaken further and thereby reduce the impact and amount of damage it could have caused otherwise. But for Tamil Nadu, Cyclone Laila has definitely been more of a saviour. The rainfall gave the people much needed respite from heat.
