New Delhi: Multi-party coalitions must evolve to a two-party system, said President A P J Abdul Kalam on Thursday at a function to commemorate the 1857 revolt.
"Many challenges need to be responded to: the emergence of multi-party coalitions as a regular form of government, that need to rapidly evolve as a stable, two-party system," he was quoted by PTI as saying.
Kalam, who retires on July 24, was speaking to MPs, Union Ministers and senior politicians at the function.
The CPI, which has refused to support demands to give Kalam a second term, called the President’s statement "unwarranted and harmful"
"We take strong objection to it. It is unwarranted, harmful and not in tune with the democratic traditions of the country," said CPI leader Gurudas Das Gupta.
"He occupies the highest seat and on the eve of his retirement he should not have made such a statement," Gupta said.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that President’s “idea” must be considered but refused to comment. "There is no question of a view. A view has to follow and not precede the debate," he said.
The Congress and the CPI and CPM are believed to have begun consultations on selecting a candidate for the Presidential election in July.
