HYDERABAD: On July 12, the planet Neptune is going to complete its first revolution around the sun from the day of its discovery on September 23, 1846 by Johann Galle. To impart better understanding of the planet, the Planetary Society of India will conduct a one-day astronomy workshop for teachers, at the All Saints High School in Abids on July 12. The workshop will highlight lesser known facts about Neptune such as presence of rings around the planet, similar to Saturn and its 13 moons. Neptune, which takes nearly 165 Earth-years to complete one revolution around the sun, was discovered through mathematical predictions. On August 22, the planet is expected to be at its brightest, when it appears closest to the Earth. The discovery of the planet paved way for discovery of Uranus and Pluto. Each school can send one teacher, preferably teaching science or social science. Entry is free and registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis. For confirmation of participation, schools can send in a request letter on their school letterhead to [email protected].
