SRINGERI: The Naxalites have reportedly opposed the proposed Tiger Project by affixing a banner near the Anti-Naxal Camp at Kigga, near here, on Thursday, demanding its withdrawal from the area. The banner, which was later removed by the police, urges state and the Central governments to instead provide basic amenities to the villagers in the area. The CPI (Maoist-Leninist), too, has warned of stringent action against the government should it go ahead with the project near the Anti-Naxal Camp at Kigga.Residents of Kigga and other surrounding villages, meanwhile, have complained that the laxity on the part of the police personnel and government officials had helped the Naxals stage a comeback. A villager who did not wish to be named, said that, “The Naxal sleeper cells are active again and this time they might hit with full force.”Suspected Naxals Mandagaru Latha and Ravindra have been reportedly visiting the villages in the KNP area regularly for the last two months. The mass combing operations, which was stopped by the police two years ago, has helped the Naxals move around freely, allege the villagers. Environmentalist Girijashankar echoes the villagers’ sentiments by saying that, “The Tiger Project poses no threat to residents of the villages. This controversy has been triggered mainly due to the misconception involving politicians with a hidden agenda.” But, this is not true, he added.
