Murray was leading the Romanian 6-2, 3-1 when Pavel called it quits.
Melbourne: Britain's Andy Murray navigated a safe passage through to the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday after his opponent Andrei Pavel retired midway through the second set.
The fourth-seed was leading the Romanian veteran 6-2, 3-1 when Pavel called it quits with a back injury.
Murray, one of the title favourites following victories over Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick already this season, will next play either Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili or Spain's Marcel Granollers.
