Starting today, the south-bound corridor of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which stretches from Worli to Marine Drive, will be open to vehicles for 16 hours every day, from 7 am to 11 pm, all week long.

Vehicles are permitted to enter the coastal road from Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk (Khan Abdul Gaffar road) between 8 am and 5 pm. The Amarsons and Haji Ali interchanges will operate from 7 am to 11 pm.

Right now, the coastal area is open for south-bound traffic only from 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays. However, the BMC plans to extend the operational hours of the coastal road to 16 hours every day of the week to test the efficiency of the tunnel systems.

The corridor was opened on a trial basis on Wednesday. As per The Indian Express report, a senior official from the Mumbai Traffic Police said that if the trial is successful, they will implement the new timing regularly.

Additionally, as per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials the other arm will open by month’s end. The civic body also plans to connect both tunnels soon.

“A few days after the other side also becomes operational, we will also work on integration of the two tunnels,” the official said.

“Integration includes starting the ventilation systems of both tunnels,” he said, adding, “and checking whether they are working in synchronisation. The integration of the various systems will be observed and checked in this period.”

He mentioned that integration will also include opening cross passages between the two tunnels. These passages will allow pedestrians or motorists to move from one tunnel to the other in case of emergencies such as vehicle breakdowns, fires, medical issues, or natural disasters.

After integrating the two arms, the official stated that the entire stretch of phase 1 will be open to round-the-clock traffic by the end of June.

Currently, only the Southbound arm, which is 9.5 kilometres out of 10.58 kilometres, is open. The remaining one-kilometre stretch will link the road to the Bandra Worli Sea Link, and this part will be a bridge.
