Nineteen people died after a four-storey building collapsed at Naik Nagar Society in Mumbai’s Kurla area late on Monday night. Rescue operations have been underway since Monday night. The rescued people have sustained injuries were shifted to civic hospitals in Ghatkopar and Sion for treatment.

Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray rushed to the spot following the incident and said that more buildings have been served notice and “our appeal is to take these notices seriously”. “It’s an unfortunate incident…some people were living in it. Search and rescue ops is on,” he said.

Thackeray also said that it is not the time for “blame game” and that the priority is to rescue the people who are trapped under the debris.

BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal earlier said that he has requested the fire bridge and NDRF to carry out the search and rescue operation carefully as there could be some people alive inside. The civic body will conduct a probe, he said.

Among the deceased is a 30-year-old man who was brought to Rajawadi hospital at Ghatkopar but was declared dead on arrival. Fire brigade personnel are searching for survivors, an official said.

Maharashtra government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the family of the deceased and free treatment for the injured. Maha Minister Subhash Desai also said that the incident will be investigated and action will be taken against those responsible, adding that a meeting has been called to ensure that such an incident doesn’t happen again.

Locals informed the fire brigade personnel that around 20-22 people were trapped under the debris when they reached the spot after receiving a call about the incident, the official said. Around a dozen fire engines were deployed at the spot besides two rescue vans and other fire brigade equipment, the official said.

Local corporator Pravina Morajkar said that the colony where the incident took place comprises four dilapidated buildings, adding that the residents were given notices to vacate five to six years back, Indian Express reported.

Yet, the residents continued to stay, she said.

Morajkar said that the tenants of the remaining three buildings will be shifted by BMC on Tuesday morning.

Former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis took to Twitter to extend condolences to the families of the deceased.

“Pained to hear about the loss of lives in the Kurla Building Collapse incident. My condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he wrote.
