Lucknow: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi woos people by giving them free TVs. UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is doing better—he has promised to show live telecast of cricket matches.
Mulayam’s generosity may have seemed innocuous but for the fact that the election process has started in the state. A notification for the first phase of polls in 62 constituencies on April 7 was notified on Tuesday.
The World Cup tournament in the West Indies is going be the biggest TV event for the next two months, and Mulayam sees an opportunity in this.
His Samajwadi Party is therefore offering to show voters live cricket matches through these customised campaign trucks.
“We will show cricket matches to entertain people,” says Surendra Mohan, the party’s candidate in Kanpur.
As no SP campaign can be complete without Amitabh Bachchan, so voters will not just see Tendulkar and Ganguly in action but also the actor praising the Mulayam’s government. Party General Secretary Amar Singh, who is a cricket fan, says there is no harm in mixing politics with cricket.
Mulayam is a former wrestler and he loves Kabbadi more than cricket, but he knows that by pleasing millions of cricket lovers in the state he can improve his chances of making a comeback.
