New Delhi: Even as the Mulayam Singh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh faces the possibility of imposition of President's rule, the chief minister is trying hard to play his cards right.
Mulayam, on Tuesday, urged the Election Commission to hold Assembly polls in the state at the earliest. "I hope the Left parties will remain firm on their opposition to the dismissal of the Samajwadi Party government," PTI quoted Yadav as saying.
"The political upheaval in the state has nothing to do with the working of the Election Commission and it should go ahead and declare the poll dates," he added.
Mulayam also made it clear that the demand for disqualification of the remaining 24 breakaway legislators of the BSP was baseless as the apex court had not passed any orders against them.
"Only 13 MLAs have been disqualified by the apex court. The rest are valid members of the Vidhan Sabha," PTI quoted him as saying. He also alleged that the Governor TV Rajeshwar is working against the government at the behest of the Congress.
"The Congress wants to ensure that Uttar Pradesh legislators are kept away from the forthcoming presidential elections and hence it wants to dismiss the government," PTI quoted him as saying.
