Kolkata: On Thursday afternoon, Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya decided to become a student once more.
With keen interest he tried to understand the working of a set of PCs that students of West Bengal will soon be using.
Created by Microsoft, Intel and local player INSYNQ, the PCs are loaded with study material for engineering and medical entrance tests for plus two students as well as secondary and higher secondary texts of the state board.
These PCs will be made available to students of the state through an easy installment scheme.
Microsoft will follow up this programme in other parts of the country soon, but Bengal was the first choice, thanks to the government's progressive attitude.
Chairman, Microsoft Corporation India Pvt Ltd Ravi Venkatesan said, "I think the Chief Minister, the IT minister and the Education minister have displayed a lot of progressive thinking. So it was natural for us to launch it in West Bengal."
"In a small period of time, West Bengal has emerged as one of the leading states that clearly means business. It is one of the few states in the country where infrastructure is actually improving," he added.
Next up in the IT sector will be setting up an IT academy in Kolkata that will be partnered by Microsoft.
The academies will train teachers of government schools who will in turn impart computer education to ten lakh students going to government schools.
With Buddhadeb?s government trying hard to attract more IT investors to the state, Microsoft's increasing interest in Bengal will surely act as a positive pointer for other investors.
