THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Social media expert Sree Sreenivasan has said that more Ministers should take a cue from Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and webcast their offices live. He was addressing a seminar on ‘Media entrepreneurship in the 21st century’ jointly organised by the Asian School of Business (ASB) and the US Consulate, Chennai. Businessmen and politicians have to come forward and utilise the space provided by social networking for brand building. Facebook, having 750 million users globally, has introduced its page facebook.com/ads for advertising which opens up enormous marketing opportunities. It bears a potential to target people of different age groups, genders, regions and languages, he said. As of June 2009, Orkut was rated the most populated social networking site in India. But it was outranked by Facebook by December 2010 with a calculated 150 million people joining within a period of six months. India, with an exciting number of newspapers and channels, ranks four on the list of top 10 users of FB with the US, Indonesia and the UK sharing the positions from top. Talking about the power of social media, he said it was proved when Egypt shut down all Internet access on January 27 and 28 this year as the revolution broke out. Social media could be a start, though it is not a solution to tackle every problem in the society like corruption. It is still the early days of social networking era and decision-makers are yet to come to the pack. Still, he warns: ‘’The major danger in social media is that your information is on the cloud.’’ Prof K Ramakrishnan, Director, ASB, welcomed the gathering and Rajiv Sreenivasan, Director-designate, delivered the introductory speech.
