Political parties and NGOs are intensifying their protest against Aamir Khan for his stand on the Sardar Sarovar Dam.

Ahmedabad: Political parties and non-governmental organisation (NGOs), including Muslim groups, have come together under the banner of `Narmada Abhiyan' to intensify protest against Aamir Khan for his stand on the Sardar Sarovar Dam.

Aamir had raised a voice for the rehabilitation of the people affected by the Sardar Sarovar Dam. This had earned him severe criticism and also led to a ban of his film Fanaa in Gujarat.

However, some people from the film fraternity have come out in support of the actor. Director Mahesh Bhatt on Thursday petitioned in SC for screening Fanaa in Gujarat.

Meanwhile, a five-member committee has been formed under the leadership of Narmada Abhiyan's Jaynarayan Vyas to decide on the course of agitation at a meeting of representatives of NGOs and political parties on Thursday.

The committee will chalk out programmes against the actor and the Producers'

Guild who have come out in support of Aamir.

Vyas said there is a perception that a youth wing of a particular party alone was agitating against the actor.

"However, it is not true. And to prove that, many NGOs of the state and political parties have come together to intensify and give a direction to the agitation," he added.

Addressing the gathering, BJP youth wing leader Amit Thakker said the Producers' Guild has threatened to release Fanaa in a week or else they will take punitive steps.

"Gujarat does not need films but it needs water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam. People of the state would not bow to such threats," he added.

He said the response of people of Gujarat on Aamir Khan's stand would refrain other filmstars and celebrities to speak against construction of the Narmada dam.

NGOs which participated in the meeting included National Council for Civil Liberties, Gujarat Sarvajanik Trust, Sardar Sena, Jamiat-e-ulema-e-Hind.

Members of BJP youth wing, National Students Union of India, CPI and Shiv Sena also participated in the meeting.
