CHENNAI: Three persons from Madhya Pradesh, including a mother-son duo, have been arrested in the city for trying to sell fake jewellery claiming it to be an “antique” gold chain, police said on Sunday. Cab driver Yugendran (38) of Krishnamurthy Nagar, Kodungaiyur, became suspicious when two men and a woman approached him and offered to sell the ornament on Saturday. Yugendran intimated the police, who picked up the trio. Grilled, they confessed that the jewellery was fake. ACP (Pulianthope) Govi Manoharan told Express that K Veeru (30), his mother K Radha (50) and P Kannaiah, all from Gandhi Nagar in Bhopal, used a similar modus operandi on earlier occasions. Manoharan said they solicited customers by telling them that the multi-strand gold chain is a piece of buried treasure. They would offer to sell it for a few lakhs, he said.If any of the prospective customers expressed doubts about its authenticity, they would remove a bead or two from the chain and ask them to check with a goldsmith.
