The Civil Supplies Department will take effective steps for more direct procurement of produces from farmers and thereby reflect it on the price levels, said food and civil supplies Minister Anoop Jacob here on Thursday.
Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, Anoop said that it had come to the notice of the government that the farmers in the state were still being exploited by middlemen to the hilt, despite the interventions through a direct purchase mechanism introduced in main production centers through Supplyco and Horticorp.
“The need to eliminate middlemen in toto is there. Vegetable prices have touched the roof-top, leaving the consumers struggling. Farmers are not being benefited either,” he said.
“Officials will be directed to ensure more procurement of produces directly in and out of the state,” he affirmed.
He pointed out that apart from the Ramzan-Onam Metro bazaars in Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, which were functioning for more than a month, and town people’s bazaars in many other locations across the state, had emerged as a big hit.
A turnover of Rs 3.94 crore has been pegged so far for Metro Bazaars and Rs 3.94 crore for town people’s bazars. For the first time in the state, mobile onam outlets were also opened at ten centers.
The distribution of 20 lakh free Onam kits for BPL families in the state is progressing through Maveli stores and Super Markets.
The Minister also assured that a minimum four litres of kerosene would be given to BPL families residing in non-electrified houses. Irrespective of APL/BPL categories, all ration card holders would be given one kilo of sugar each during the onam season, he added.
