BELGAUM: The Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) held Kannada and Urdu corporators responsible for not passing the resolution to accord civic reception to Jnanpith awardee Chandrashekhar Kambar.Kannada corporator Lathifkhan Pathan of the Belgaum City Corporation (BCC), along with nine corporators of the MES on Wednesday, said that the resolution to accord civic reception to Kambar could have been passed easily if the 18 Kannada and Urdu corporators who had abstained from voting, voted in favour of the resolution.Sambhaji Chavan, the only Marathi corporator to oppose the decision, clarified that he was not against giving civic reception to the litterateur, but only his stand on Kannada. Mayor Manda Balekundri who had chaired the council meeting blamed Kannada and Urdu corporators for not passing the resolution. She said that the BCC would have passed the resolution in its last meeting had the Kannada and Urdu corporators not disturbed the meeting. She too clarified that she was neither against Chandrashekar Kambar nor Kannadigas.
