Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar saw a crackdown by civic authorities on Monday, with bulldozers deployed to clear encroachments blocking drains following a tragic flooding incident that killed three IAS aspirants.
The basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle was inundated during heavy rain on Saturday evening, leading to the deaths of Tanya Soni, Shreya Yadav, and Navin Dalwin. The basement, used improperly for educational purposes instead of its designated function for parking and storage, had only one exit, trapping the students inside as waters surged.

On Monday, the MCD began a bulldozer operation to clear cement blocks obstructing drains. Video footage from ANI showed the heavy machinery at work. This operation came after the MCD sealed 13 IAS coaching centers for violating building norms.
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has ordered an inquiry to investigate possible negligence by MCD officials. Meanwhile, Delhi Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ashwani Kumar has terminated the local Junior Engineer and suspended the Assistant Engineer.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has come under severe criticism for its handling of the situation. Many accuse the MCD of negligence, citing long-standing warnings about blocked drains and encroachments that have contributed to chronic waterlogging in the area.
The tragic death of students has sparked widespread outrage. After the incident, protests by students broke out against the “criminal negligence” of the government that led to these deaths. Amid ongoing protest by students against civic authorities for their negligence, a student said: “All this is for show.”
