KOLLAM: Considering the apprehensions of the prosecution that granting bail may hamper the progress of the case, the Kollam District and Sessions Court on Saturday rejected the bail plea of the Italian marines accused in the killing of fishermen.Dismissing the petition, Sessions Judge P D Rajan said that if the petitioners, foreign nationals, were released on bail and if they leave India, it would be hard to try them.  The court said that the petition was dismissed in the interest of the state and the public. “The investigation is completed and the chargesheet has been filed, and the remedy is to expedite the trial. Hence, there is no merit in this bail application and it is dismissed,” the court observed. The petitioners’ counsel, represented by C S Nair and A K Manoj, contended that they were ready to offer sovereign surety by the Government of Italy, since they were deployed by the Ministry of the Republic of Italy. The prosecution argued that Italy is a sovereign country and the trial court cannot accept the Italian Government as a sovereign surety in the case.
