The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, having a stake in the Kothamangalam Mar Baselios Hospital, was unable to effectively intervene even as the nurses’ unrest was at its peak.
Sources close to the Jacobite Church leadership said that they were in a helpless situation owing to the limited stake in the hospital administration. The senior Metropolitan of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church also shared the same opinion.
“It is true that the Church leadership could not intervene in the issue and arrive at an amicable solution. The hospital is owned by St Thomas Jacobite Church (‘cheriya palli’) parish and is run by the council of elected members there. The higher ups of the Church have no stake in the management of the hospital. Even the Catholicos has limited power,” the sources said. They said the Church leadership had held informal talks with the hospital management, but it failed to fructify.
“The nurses were sticking to their demands. The management was ready to provide appointment to the deserving people,” they said.
