BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told the Assembly on Monday on the murder of the then Umerkote MLA Jagabandhu Majhi that the case was being investigated by an additional superintendent police of Crime Branch under the supervision of an inspector-general of police. ‘’Evidence collected so far reveals the involvement of Left-wing extremists operating from Chhattisgarh,’’ he said. Dismissing Opposition allegations that the Government had miserably failed to tackle the Left-wing ultras, the Chief Minister said the militant activities of the CPI (Maoist) have been contained to a great extent. ‘’There has been no organised Maoist attack on security forces during the last one year. Important roads have been secured for effective deployment of forces and operations by police and security forces,’’ he said in his reply to the discussion on the supplementary demand of grants for the Home and the General Administration departments. The Chief Minister said his Government was formulating a revised surrender and rehabilitation policy by making the package more attractive to encourage Maoist cadres to give up arms. Stating that the strength of Special Operation Group (SOG) has been substantially enhanced, the Chief Minister said inter-State coordination meetings are being held with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand for better coordinated operation against the Maoists. The Chief Minister slammed the UPA Government at the Centre for reduced allocation of Central assistance under Modernisation of Police Force (MPF) scheme over the years despite the State utilising 99 per cent of the funds provided since 2000. The supplementary budget of Home and the General Administration departments was passed amid Opposition walkout.
