KEONJHAR: A Maoist was killed during a joint combing operation by the security forces, Keonjhar and Angul police at Mundatopa forest area under Kanjipani police limits on Keonjhar-Sundargarh-Angul border on Tuesday afternoon. Western Range DIG Yaswant Jethwa told mediapersons that about 15 Maoists attacked police during the combing operation and the armed forces retaliated. One Maoist was killed while the others managed to flee. Police seized three pistols, bullets, three kit bags and a tiffin carriage from the spot. Jethwa said the forces could not reach the particular spot due to darkness and forest cover. The forces and district officials are likely to reach the place in Mundapota forest, located 90 km from the district headquarters town and 30 km from Kanjipani police station, early Wednesday morning, he added.Keonjhar SP Ashis Kumar Singh, DIG of CRPF JPK Rao, Commandant Preetmohan Singh, Deputy Commandant DC Dalabehera and Sub- Collector Rabindra Kumar Mishra are camping at Kanjipani police station. “Though efforts are on to ascertain the dead Maoist’s identity, he is believed to be a member of Kalinga Nagar division. He was working as a guide of Sushil alias Basanta and they moved in the forest with weapons,” the DIG added.This is the fifth encounter in Keonjhar district. On July 3 last year, top Maoist cadre Sunil was killed by the police at Sapua reserve forest.
