Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia survived tense moments on counting day to defeat BJP’s Ravinder Singh Negi by a margin of over 3,000 votes in Patparganj constituency.

Seen as a frontline face in Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s education and healthcare push in the national capital, Sisodia’s win has silenced those who questioned his decision to declare support for the Shaheen Bagh protesters in the face of a polarizing campaign by the BJP.

Speaking at a News18 event, Sisodia had said that he stands with the people of Shaheen Bagh. The deputy chief minister was the only leader to have openly supported the protest.

The AAP, had, by and large, kept itself away from the issue and remained relatively silent on the Shaheen Bagh protest which has led to traffic woes on the Delhi-Noida route and on key roads in south Delhi.

The BJP was quick to make use of the statement in their favour as party spokesperson Sambit Patra claimed Kejriwal and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had orchestrated the protests at Shaheen Bagh, where he alleged that slogans against the unity of India were raised. Several fact-checks proved the claim to be wrong.

Sisodia held the education, finance, planning, tourism, land and building, piping, motor services, women and child, art, culture and languages portfolios in the outgoing Arvind Kejriwal cabinet. Before joining politics, Sisodia had worked as a social activist and journalist. He hosted a program called "Zero Hour" for All India Radio in 1996 and then worked for Zee News as a news producer and reader between 1997-2005. He is one of the founding members of the AAP.

His profession according to the election affidavit filed with the Election Commission is 'Political Activist/ DY. Chief Minister NCT of Delhi'. His total declared assets are Rs. 93.5 lakh which includes Rs 7.5 lakh in moveable assets and Rs 86 lakh in immoveable assets. His total declared income is Rs. 2.5 lakh of which Rs. 2.5 lakh is self income.

The deputy CM mentioned three criminal cases against him in the electon affidavit.
