RAIRAKHOL: A tribal Siba Naik (65) allegedly died of starvation in Chupkadadar village in Tribanpur gram panchayat under Rairakhol block on Friday night.Siba and wife Bela Naik (55) were living in abject poverty and had not been issued a BPL card or old age pension. Sources said that Siba was suffering from geriatric diseases and was dependent on forest produce as his one acre of land was infertile. The couple had also approached the Sarpanch of Jayanti Munda and block officials seeking help but in vain. Rairakhol Sub-Collector Ananta Kumar Bhuyian denied that the death was due to starvation and said that he has sent the Rairakhol Additional Block Development Officer (ABDO) RN Chakraborty to verify and submit a report. The Additional BDO, however, said steps have been initiated to provide succour. While rice has been provided, Siba’s wife will be covered under other welfare measures.
