A 36-year-old man was publicly beaten and had his head and moustache partially shaved by a group of people on suspicion of theft at a market in Neemuch district in Madhya Pradesh.
The incident happened on Thursday when nine individuals filmed themselves assaulting Mangilal Dhakad at Krishi Upaj Mandi in Manasa, about 30km from the district headquarters, and then shared the video on social media.
Dhakad claimed he was targeted by the group, which included some traders, who suspected him of stealing mustard from the market.
Neemuch Superintendent of Police Ankit Jaiswal stated that after the incident came to light on Thursday evening, he instructed the Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) to take immediate action.
Following Dhakad’s complaint, a case was registered against nine people, including the main accused, Vipin Birla, and Ghanshyam, a barber who partially shaved Dhakad’s head and moustache.
The accused have been charged under IPC sections 294 (obscene acts and songs), 147 (rioting), and 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour a person), Jaiswal added.
A manhunt has been launched to apprehend the accused, the police officer confirmed.
