This year the Mumbai International Film Festival (MAMI) is definitely better and bigger. With 215 feature films from 59 countries, 15 documentaries, 24 short films, and a retrospective of 49 Japanese films, shown in the span of eight days. Academy award winning director Jane Campion and Indian actor-director Suhasini Mani Rathnam, who are a part of the festival’s all woman jury, were also present at the event. Campion will also be taking two master classes in direction during the festival. There will also be a separate discussion between eight Indian lady film directors, apart from many other discussions and debates.
The inaugural event, attended by many dignitaries of the industry, opened with a speech by veteran film-maker Shyam Benegal, the chairman of MAMI.
The event, hosted by actresses Minissha Lamba and Prachi Desai, had a few hiccups though. The girls forgot to call Suhasini Manirathnam when the jury was invited on the stage. It was Campion who reminded them of their goof-up. Later, a show put up by Terence Lewis, a tribute to the spirit of Mumbai, was tacky and immature. The venue was also a bit of an embarrassment as Chandan cinema didn’t seem equipped enough to handle an event of such a stature. However, all was forgiven as the opening movie David Fincher's ‘The Social Network’ was shown. A fitting opener for a festival, which promises some of the best films that the world has to offer.
Here’s looking forward to an exciting week ahead.
