Teachers’ Day is celebrated across India on September 5 every year. The day marks the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was an esteemed educationist, the first Vice-President of India and the second President of India. West Bengal for many years has seen chief minister Mamata Banerjee celebrate the day by giving awards to deserving teachers. However, say sources, things may be different this time.
The state government is not organising Teachers’ Day in a big way this year and Mamata Banerjee will also not participate in the programmes, said sources. School education minister Bratya Basu will lead the muted celebrations, they said.
Speaking to News18, Basu said, “We all are upset with the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case and we are all seeking justice from the CBI now. There is nothing to celebrate. We will, therefore, only do a small programme.”
There is a chance, observers say, that teachers may hold a sudden protest over the heinous crime in Kolkata last month and that’s why the state government has opted for low-key celebrations.
People from all fields and professions, including teachers, have participated in protests following the incident.
“Is there any apprehension that there may be widespread protests and that’s why the CM is not coming?” asked Bharatiya Janata Party leader Agnimitra Paul.
The Supreme Court will also hear matters related to the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case on Thursday, which is expected to remain in focus.
