HYDERABAD: On the occasion of World Animal Day on Tuesday, the environment education wing of Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board organised a field visit for school students to the Animal Welfare Centre in Amberpet and to the Ghoshala at the Lower Tank Bund.The Animal Rescue Centre at Amberpet is home to about 62 street dogs and 27 monkeys while the Goshala at Lower Tank bund takes care of over 440 cows.The visit was organised to mark the World Animal Welfare Day today which is part of the year long preparation for the Unite Nations Eleventh Conference of Parties (UN COP 11) in October next year.Mentioning about the importance of sterilisation in these animals, the animal keeper Ramesh said, “The street dogs are inoculated and sterilised after which they are carefully left in the same area from which they have been lifted.Ears of these dogs are marked with a small cut in different shapes to identify them.” He further added, “If you find such dogs you don’t need to be afraid of them, as they are safe.And the monkeys are left in the forests after sterilisation on advice from the forest officers.” Prevent animal crueltyIn a representation to the director general of police, APSRTC, South central railway and the commissioner of the endowment department, the Sahayog Organisation has asked for a complete ban on animal sacrifices on the ocassion of Ayudha puja.Information on offenders can be passed onto special police officer Mahesh Agarwal on 9394005600.As per the Andhra Pradesh Animal and Birds Sacrifice (Prohibiton) Act no.15 of 1970 and the prevention of Cruelty to animals act, 1960 sacrificing any animal or bird for the purpose of any form of religious worship is illegal.
