The Madras High Court has directed the State government to hold an inquiry into the report that alleged various irregularities and malpractices against  Bharathiar University in Coimbatore and pass appropriate orders on the report, within four weeks.

A division bench comprising justices Elipe Dharma Rao and M Venugopal gave the direction last week, while passing interim orders on a contempt application filed by Bharathiar University SC/ST Teachers and Staff Welfare Association, seeking punishment for the Registrar for not complying with the court’s earlier orders.

The writ appeal from the association contended that the rule of reservation was not followed in the matter of appointment/promotion to SC/STs. The bench on November 8 last year, had directed the university to maintain status-quo on appointments/promotions of the teaching staff.

The association filed the present contempt application, alleging that despite this order, the university had in March last given service extension to 22 people for five years up to 2017.

A probe report submitted by a former member of the Syndicate and a vigilance inspector alleged violations and malpractices on the university.

Hence, the government must inquire into the matter and pass appropriate orders within four weeks to enable the court to pass orders on the contempt application, the bench said.
